A. Our exterior walls are built with solid yellow pine D-logs. The D-logs are 6”x6” to 6”x8” or 8”x8” to 8”x10”. The portable tiny cabins are usually built with 6” wide logs while the pre-fabs and kits are done with 8” wide logs. The logs are filled and stacked one layer at a time and fastened with Log Boss™ logs. Between each layer we put a bead of construction adhesive and a strip of ¼” Log Home Gasket Tape to seal it off.

A. A six inch thick log wall has the equivalent of about R-9 efficiency, while an eight inch thick log wall has the equivalent of about R-12.

Also, the floor systems are insulated with 2” of closed cell spray foam insulation, giving the equivalent of about R-40 efficiency.

The roof decks are insulated with 4” of closed cell insulation, also giving the equivalent of about R-40 efficiency.

A. Maintenance actually isn’t as bad as most people think! We like to treat our cabins with borate which provides one year of protection against mold, rot and insects. You simply mix borate with warm water and spray it on the logs with a garden sprayer to the point of runoff. When finished, you wash down your windows and doors and any other non-wood surfaces that might have borate on them and you are good for another year. Best conditions for application are from 40 degrees F when the wood is damp.

Stained log cabins should be recoated at least every five years. Staining can be done with a brush or paint sprayer. When spraying stain, be sure to mask the windows, doors and fascia and anything else you don’t want stained.

A. We like to use Sashco’s Log Jam chinking. It stays flexible which enables it to move with the logs as they expand and shrink from changing temperatures and weather conditions. When properly applied, Log Jam will absorb movement for up to 5 years. Repairs are fairly simple. Cut out the torn area with a utility knife. Wear heavy gloves to protect your fingers from the blade and always cut away from your body to avoid cutting yourself. Make sure the backer rod is still intact. If not, you can substitute with door and widow foam, lay a bead about 3/8” in diameter. Next you apply a fresh layer of Log Jam about ¼” thick and smooth it out with a spatula or wet brush. Clean up the edges with water then stand back and admire your handiwork.

A. Depending on the size and list of extras, it takes us from 3 to 7 weeks to do one turnkey tiny cabin from start to finish.
